Porous materials are used as sorbent materials for sample preparation because of their characteristics i.e. large surface area, porous structure, selectivity, and high chemical/ thermal stability. The purpose of this review is to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the current advancements in the application of porous materials used as sorbents in analytical sample preparation. To this end, we first provide a brief overview of the classification of porous materials based on pore size and building framework including inorganic, organic, and inorganic-organic materials. Also, the performance of porous materials and their composites in different extraction techniques and possible mechanisms based on the structure-property relationship (SPR) approach between sorbent and analyte as a vital aspect of extraction is also evaluated. Furthermore, the limitations and future trends of these sorbents, the most promising directions for future extraction development, and the challenges that will have to be faced are also outlined.
