Abstract

Solar-powered desalination, utilizing efficient photoabsorbers, offers a sustainable solution to water scarcity. Key components of this technology include photothermal layers and substrates. The photothermal layer absorbs sunlight and converts it into thermal energy. The substrate continuously pumps water to the photothermal layer, minimizing heat losses to the bulk water. Wood sponge (WS), a porous material derived from natural wood, has emerged as a promising substrate for solar desalination. In other word WS\\\'s high porosity, large interlayer channels, and strong interconnectivity result in superior thermal insulation, rapid water transport, and efficient salt exchange between the heating surface and saline water [1–3]. Consequently, WS emerges as a promising substrate for solar desalination systems. In this work, we present a highly efficient photoabsorber, prepared by coating WS with g-C3N4 and FeNi NPs. This innovative photoabsorber exhibited a remarkable solar steam generation flux of 1.43 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun. To assess the purification capabilities of the photoabsorber, the concentrations of Na⁺, K⁺, and Ca²⁺ ions were measured before and after the desalination process. The concentrations of these ions were significantly reduced, from 3138.4, 99.5, and 833.2 mg/L to 26.3, 2.4, and 8.7 mg/L, respectively. This translates to a removal efficiency approaching 100%, resulting in ion concentrations well below the drinking water standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Environmental Protection (UEP) Agency.
