Abstract
It has been shown that compounds extracted from Hemiscorpius lepturus venom provide a promising framework for future drug discovery and therapeutic development. The current research was established to determine the therapeutic potentials of HL-7 and -10 peptides in BALB/c mice with diabetes induced by streptozotocin. In order to induce diabetes, BALB/c mice received intraperitoneal streptozocin at a dosage of 70 mg/kg per body weight. The two peptides were intraperitoneally injected into diabetic animals for a duration of three consecutive weeks. Then, the biochemical parameters assessed. The obtained data indicated that both peptides significantly (p < 0.05) lowered blood glucose levels in diabetic rats. Moreover, the application of both peptides resulted in elevated serum insulin levels in comparison to the untreated diabetic group. Fur- thermore, both peptides caused a notable decline in the serum concentrations of TG, LDL, and total cholesterol. Besides, the serum levels of liver enzymes were significantly diminished in the peptides-treated group when compared with the untreated diabetic group. Also, both peptides were capable of significantly reducing NO and MDA levels in diabetic rats (p < 0.05). Moreover, the two peptides demonstrated the ability to modulate diabetic hyperlipidemia by reducing the serum levels of the angiopoietin-3 protein. These findings show that both peptides, through their antioxidant properties, can improve pancreatic and liver function, and decrease serum concentrations of ALP, AST, and ALT. Therefore, the two peptides may hold potential as therapeutic potentials in the treatment of type II diabetes.
