The adsorption phenomenon is affected from the interactions between adsorbate molecules and adsorbent. The absorption capacity depends on adsorbate (pKa/pKb, polarity, functionality, size and molecular weight), adsorbent (functional groups, pore size and structure) and solution conditions (pH, ionic strength and temperature). In the aqueous phase, the van der Waals, induced-dipole, dipole-dipole, and hydrogen-bonding forces are responsible for binding and accumulation of chemical compounds on adsorbents. In recent years, many efforts have been devoted to design and preparation of nanoporous adsorbents as well as smart strategies and performance enhancement for deep desulfurization. In this review, a summary of the synthetic methods, improvement of strategies for desulfurization processes and future prospects are presented, with introducing some typical examples belonging to different modified porous composites [1–3].
