Abstract

Background: Ectoparasites such as ticks, lice, and flies are major vectors of infectious diseases in both humans and livestock. Due to the growing resistance to chemical pesticides and their environmental impact, medicinal plants have gained attention as safer alternatives. Mentha longifolia (wild mint) is one such plant, traditionally used in Iranian medicine, with reported anti-parasitic properties. Methods: A structured literature review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and SID databases. Keywords included Mentha longifolia, herbal extract, antiparasitic, ectoparasites, ticks, lice, and flies. Studies published between 2010 and 2024 were screened. Inclusion criteria were: use of Mentha longifolia extracts (aqueous, alcoholic, hydrodistilled), targeting arthropod parasites, and reporting efficacy indicators such as mortality rate, behavioral changes, or tissue damage. Results: Among 23 reviewed studies, Mentha longifolia extracts—particularly ethanolic and hydrodistilled forms—exhibited strong antiparasitic effects. Mortality rates against Rhipicephalus ticks and Pediculus humanus lice consistently exceeded 90% in vitro. GC-MS profiling revealed 1,8-cineole (up to 32%), thymol (18–25%), and α-pinene (12–20%) as dominant bioactive compounds. Field applications confirmed efficacy under natural infestation conditions, with no adverse effects reported in treated animals. Conclusion: Mentha longifolia demonstrates promising antiparasitic activity against arthropod pests. Its efficacy, low toxicity, and environmental compatibility support its potential integration into sustainable parasite control strategies. Further research is needed to standardize extraction methods and validate field applications.
