Abstract

Background: Tendonitis is a prevalent musculoskeletal condition in dogs, cats, and horses, leading to reduced range of motion, increased pain, and inflammation. Laser therapy is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment option capable of modulating inflammation and pain while promoting tissue repair. This review aims to evaluate current evidence on the use of laser and Light Emitted Diode (LED) light therapy for tendonitis in horses, focusing on mechanisms of action, clinical outcomes, and gaps in the literature. Methods: A systematic search was conducted for studies published between 2002 and 2025 examining laser or LED light therapy applied to tendonitis or related tendon and ligament injuries in these species. Both experimental (animal models) and clinical trials were included, with attention to laser parameters such as wavelength, dose, and frequency. Results: Evidence suggests that light therapy can reduce tendon swelling, improve histological organization of tendon fibers, enhance Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production, and decrease pain. However, studies on dogs and cats remain inconsistent and vary in treatment protocols, making direct comparisons difficult. Conclusion: Laser therapy appears to be a promising adjunct in managing tendonitis in horses, with potential benefits in dogs and cats, but more standardized treatment protocols and more high-quality clinical trials are needed to establish its efficacy and optimal parameters.
