Background: The Monteggia fracture is a rare type of bone fracture referred to a fracture of the proximal third of the ulna with dislocation of the proximal head of the radius that was initially described by Giovanni Battista Monteggia in 1814. As a fracture, it rarely reported in the equids. This article reports a Monteggia fracture in a mule. Methods:(case description) A 2-years old 180 kg male mule was presented to the Veterinary Hospital of Ferdowsi university of Mashhad with acute non-weight-bearing lameness of the right forelimb. Results:(treatment) According to the history provided, the mule had been tethered to a tree with a rope and later the mule was found in lateral recumbency with the forelimb entrapped in the rope. Clinical examination revealed severe acute swelling in the proximal region of the limb. Radiographic evaluation with two views (lateralomedial and dorsopalmar) confirmed the Monteggia fracture. Unfortunately, the owner declined surgical treatment Conclusion: In general, only a few cases of Monteggia fracture have been reported and some case reports have documented successful management. In all treated cases, the ulnar fracture was repaired with a caudally positioned Dynamic Compression Plate (DCP) involving engagement of the radius. Cubital joint stability was maintained in all three cases, and the horses were salvaged. However, the prognosis for returning to activity is poor and due to the owner’s decision treatment was discontinued.
