Abstract

Atmospheric turbulence significantly impacts the propagation of optical vortex beams, making their study crucial for advanced photonic applications. This research investigates the behavior of double Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) vortex beams with varying topological charge combinations under controlled turbulence conditions. The primary goal was to understand how topological charge configurations influence the beams’ scintillation index and interference patterns, with a focus on their practical implications for optical systems. In this study, we combined numerical simulations and experimental methods. Hybrid binary fork gratings, designed in MATLAB and implemented via a spatial light modulator, were utilized to generate double LG vortex beams. Experimental conditions were calibrated to match real-world atmospheric turbulence by scaling parameters, such as the refractive index structure constant (C 2 n ) and propagation length. Beam profiling techniques validated the accuracy of generated beams. Key findings revealed that beams with identical signs of topological charge, with identical signs of topological charge, the scintillation index is minimized at a topological charge difference of approximately ∆l = 7. For beams with opposite-signed topological charges, which form well-known petal-like interference patterns, our analysis of the scintillation index under turbulence revealed novel behavior: for unequal charges, the index peaks at a specific difference before declining, while for equal but opposite charges (|l1| = |l2|), the index peaks at a charge magnitude of |l| ≈ 6. These results identify optimal charge configurations for resilience against turbulence-induced scintillation. This work contributes to the understanding of vortex beam dynamics, offering new insights into designing robust optical communication, quantum information, and optical trapping systems. Future research may explore more complex charge configurations and diverse turbulence scenarios to further optimize these systems.
