Abstract
Escherichia coli is widely recognized as a commensal member of the intestinal microbiota in humans and warm-blooded animals. However, several emerging species within the Escherichia genus have been identified as novel threats to public health and animal well-being in recent years. These species have been isolated from a broad range of animal hosts, including livestock, companion animals, wildlife, as well as from clinical human samples. The identification of new species such as E. fergusonii, E. albertii, E. marmotae, E. ruysiae, and E. whittamii has expanded the taxonomic landscape of the genus. Recent reports have associated these emerging Escherichia species with severe disease manifestations, including hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), diarrhea, and systemic infections in both humans and animals. Their demonstrated ability to infect a wide spectrum of hosts has raised concerns regarding zoonotic potential and cross-species transmission. Given the increasing frequency of their detection, further investigations are essential to elucidate their epidemiology, assess public health implications, and develop effective prevention and control strategies. The scientific community is currently focused on enhancing diagnostic methodologies and implementing preventive measures to mitigate the potential risks posed by these emerging pathogens.
