Abstract

Today, total hip arthroplasty (THA) has become a common operation in orthopedics. Considering the expansion of the necessity for this surgery, its use has grown rapidly along with orthopedic implants over time. There has been extensive progress in materials, properties, and coatings in the last decade, including highly cross-linked polyethylene liners, ceramic femoral heads, porous and 3D-printed titanium alloys, hydroxyapatite and calcium phosphate bioactive coatings, and antibacterial surface modifications such as silver nanoparticle coatings. Hip arthroplasty implants are among the large, complex, and high-tech metal pieces implanted in the patient’s body during the operation. There needs to be study and research on different aspects of these parts, specifically the coatings applied on the surface of these parts. In this paper, after an overview of the nature of hip arthroplasty and its types, the implants used in this operation will be reviewed. It will be seen that these parts are divided into two categories, femoral and acetabular, each of which includes various components with different properties and conditions. Afterward, the materials used for the implants, namely titanium, cobalt-chromium, and stainless steel, will be surveyed. The coating materials used for the total hip joints will be discussed. The reason for the use of coatings and their required conditions, and in particular, the bioactive coating of hydroxyapatite (HA), will be explained. Finally, the properties of other ceramics will be examined, and the coating methods will be briefly discussed.
