Abstract
This paper reviews the conceptual evolution of the computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) during the forty years of its history. Some functions of computer and designer are described and compared to express the advantages of the computer-aided engineering in design and manufacturing process. Furthermore, the recent applications of the CAE in robotics, process planning and factory management are discussed. Some aspects of CAE, which have been utilized in Iran automotive industry, are reviewed.
