The Zavin dam on the river of Zavin is located in the Kalat area about 60 km north-east of Mashhad city in the northeast of Iran. The dam presently is under construction and will be completed in 2002. This dam has been designed as a gravity concrete dam. Geologocal factors played a major role in the location of Zavin dam site. The dam and its associated concrete structures are mainly founded on limestone and marlstone of Shurijeh formation formation of lower cretaceous age. These rocks are affected by highly jointing and faulting. This paper discusses the site investigation and principal geologic conditions and features of rock units, e.g., fracture systems and other inherent structural weakness, physical and mechanical properties, and permeability of each rock units on the behavior of Zavin concrete gravity dam site.
