Impact dampers in various forms are used to control the response of vibratory systems subjected to either forced or self-excitations. In this paper the performance of an impact damper for controlling the vibration of a van der Pol oscillator is investigated using the incremental harmonic balance (IHB) method. A numerical method has been used in order to comparison with the analytical results. At the final stage the effect of the coefficient of restitution in reducing the amplitude of vibration is studied.
