Abstract

Trabecular bone’s capability to adapt its architecture to the surrounding environment has been a subject of research for more than a century. In the beginning of the 21st century, Huiskes and co-workers [1] proposed a semi-mechanistic bone remodeling theory. The purpose of this research is to simulate and improve their theory by developing a computer code, as well as incorporating cellular accommodation effect. The regulatory mechanism proposed by Huiskes and colleagues is implemented and studied in a MATLAB code using finite element (FE) method. In addition to simulating the osteocyte mechanosensory role and separation of osteoclast and osteoblast activity as proposed by Huiskes et al. [1], we entered cellular accommodation effect proposed by Turner [2] into the model. Trabecular-like structures for different loading conditions and directionalities have been resulted using our approach. Furthermore, the model was able to predict stress shielding and also showed qualities of global mechanical optimality. In summary, results of our research showed that model proposed by Huiskes and co-workers has a good scientific merit and including cellular accommodation effect in their model will help to predict more realistic morphologies in time-dependent simulations.
