Abstract
Let {Xi, i1} be asequenceofiidabsolutelycontinuousrandomvariablesdistributedaccordingtothecumulativedistribution function (cdf) F(·; ) andprobabilitydensityfunction(pdf) f (·; ), where is anunknownparameter.Anobservation Xj is called an upper recordvalue if itsvalueexceedsallpreviousobservations.Thus, Xj is an upper record if Xj >Xi for every i < j. Analogously, an upper k-record valueisdefinedintermsofthe k-th largest X yet seen.Itisofinteresttonotethattherearesituationsinwhich only recordsareobserved,suchasindestructivestresstesting,meteorology,hydrology,seismology,andmining.Foramore specific example,considerthesituationoftestingthebreakingstrengthofwoodenbeamsasdescribedin Glick (1978). Interest in recordshasincreasedsteadilyovertheyearssince Chandler\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s (1952) formulation.
