Abstract

Genetic engineering of food is a branch of science which involves deliberate modification of the genetic material of plants or animals. Many kinds of foods which are consumed today are either genetically modified (GM) foods, or contain ingredients, which are prepared using genetic engineering. Despite of potential benefits of genetic engineering of foods in food production industry, the technology is surrounded by controversy. Criticizes to GM Technology has been proposed on behalf of consumer and health groups, organic farmers, environmentalists, concerned scientists, ethicists, religious right groups, food advocacy groups, some politicians and trade protectionists. Adequate regulations, constant monitoring and research are essential to avoid possible harmful effects from GM food technology. There is no specific mention of altered, modified, genetically engineered food and ingredients in the Quran or the tradition of Prophet Mohammad. However, genetically modified or engineered products from prohibited animals are prohibited.
