Abstract
In traditional programming methods, achieving an objective is implemented considering the constraints based on linear and/or nonlinear equations involving crisp coefficients. In setting road safety strategies aimed at optimized application of existing budgets while minimizing the road casualties or maximizing the benefits due to reduction of these casualties, deterministic programming models are developed. In this paper, by using the fuzzy reasoning procedure, the inference indicating the reduction of road casualty rate is stated following the simultaneous implementation of two strategies: (1) developing road infrastructures by road authorities, and (2) amplifying speed control programs by police. The result of such a reasoning (i.e. the defuzzification result) includes the percent of growth in road casualty rates following the two mentioned strategies. This growth percentage should be minimized using a mathematical programming approach, accompanied with suitable constraints aimed at finding the optimum supply of each strategy.
