Abstract
Tuned mass damper is one of the aspects of passive structural control systems that aimed to eliminate or suppress the vibrations generated by external excitation. The formulations for TMD appeared in literature are based on single degree of freedom structure. In tall buildings the higher mode shapes also affect the seismic behavior. The research presents a 15 story reinforced concrete frame equipped with TMD device installed in one or two stories. SDOF structure with TMD formulas are considered to design TMD specifications for each mode. Time history analysis under TABAS records with moderate intensities are carried out to evaluate the role of dampers in mitigation of the vibrations. The interaction force caused by TMD movements calculated numerically and imposed on placement of damper. This could partially lead us to develop a perspective view of performance of the device on high rise buildings. Frame responses are compared in different cases of using TMD and without it. Results showed obvious improvements in seismic behavior and reduction in lateral displacements.
