Eye proptosis is a condition resulting in forward displacement and entrapment of the eye from behind by the eyelids. The most frequent cause of proptosis in dogs is head or facial trauma. Prolapse occurs most frequently in brachycephalic (short nosed) breeds. Six dogs were referred to Veterinary Clinic of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad with proptosis by different causes. Four of them were male and the others were female. The average of age were 3 to 8 years (mean = 3.7 years) and duration of prolapse was 7-24 hours (12.6 hours). In one case immediate enucleation of the proptosed globe was necessary. In anothers, emergency surgical replacement of the globes was performed. In all cases, intravenous methylprednisolone sodium succinate was administrated to treat or prevent optic neuropathy and orbital edema. After general aneshthesia, globes were routinely prepared for surgery via lavage with NaCl solution and lubrication with artificial tears. By placement of 2 or 3 simple interrupted traction sutures (placed at one-half thickness of the eyelids), the dorsal and ventral eyelids of the eye were retracted, elevated, and moved overlying the globe. At the same time, gentle retrograde pressure was placed on the eye by using a scalpel handle placed parallel to the corneal curvature to help return the globe to the orbit. By tying temporary tarsorrhaphy sutures and stent, the globe was maintained in its normal position.
