Abstract

This paper describes the application of the genetic algorithm (GA) to the optimization of steel plate girders. The objective is to minimize the weight of the girders subjected to the constraints established by design codes. Girders with various span lengths and loadings are studied. The results obtained from the GA are compared with results obtained from the traditional techniques and neural network application and found to be more accurate. Finally, a parametric study makes use of the GA is carried out in order to investigate the influence of web slenderness and flange rigidity on the optimum design of plate girders.
