Abstract

MagnetoelasticpropertiesofNd6Fe13Cu intermetalliccompoundarereported.Tostudythemagneto- elasticbehaviourofthiscompound,thethermalexpansionaswellasthelongitudinal(ll) and transverse(lt) magnetostrictionweremeasuredbyusingthestraingaugemethodintheselected temperaturerangeof80–500Kunderappliedmagneticfieldsupto1.5T.Ananomalyandinvar-type effectsareobservedinthelinearthermalexpansionand a(T) curvesattheNe´ el temperature.Thelinear spontaneousmagnetostrictiondecreasessharplybyapproachingtheNe´ el temperatureandalsoshows the short-rangemagneticorderingeffectswhenantiferromagnetic–paramagnetictransitionoccurs. In thelowfieldregion,theabsolutevaluesoftheanisotropicmagnetostrictionaresmallandthenstart to increasewithappliedmagneticfield.Eachisofieldcurveoftheanisotropicmagnetostrictionpasses throughaminimumandthenapproachestozerowithincreasingtemperature.Thismagnetostriction compensationarisesfromthedifferenceinthemagnetoelasticcouplingconstantsofthesublatticesin this compound.
