Abstract

Neurotoxins with PLA2 activity are interesting since they specifically affect motor nerve terminals and evoke changes that lead to a typical triphasic effect on release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. At least two steps are required for toxins to induce their effects and finally block the release of acetylcholine. In the first step, toxins bind to the nerve terminal surface that gives them access to their targets, for example, voltage-gated potassium channels and during the second step, by use of their PLA2 enzyme activity, they hydrolyses the membrane and subsequently block the neuromuscular transmission.
