Abstract
Preparation of suitable catalysts has been concerned in production of biodiesel from oil with high FFA as west cooking oil. In this study, the catalytic activity of prepared Al-promoted and pure sulfated zirconia by solvent-free method was investigated in esterification of oleic acid to FAME. Due to higher percents of the tetragonal phases of zirconia and the little particle size of Al2O3/S-ZrO2 than S-ZrO2, the catalyst showed higher catalytic activity. Then, the optimized conditions in FAME production using oleic acid in present Al2O3/S-ZrO2 were studied. The result showed the best activity at 110 oC, 2 wt,% of catalyst (w/w oleic acid) and 9 molar ratio of methanol/oleic acid for reaction duration 60 min.
