Abstract
Camelthorn (Alhagi maurorum Medic.) belong to Leguminosae family is distributed throughout Iran, where it is used as an important traditional herbal medicine. Camelthorn is a spiny deciduous, perennial, salt marsh under shrub, native from Eurasia, commonly found in both inland and coastal areas of Iran. Camelthorn in terms of traditional medicine has a cold nature and is effective for bladder and kidney and bladder stones. The essential oils and various extracts from Camelthorn have been shown to possess Antiprotozoal, antiarrhythmic, anticancer, cooling and bitter, anti-bilious, antiseptic properties, diaphoretic, and is a laxative, diuretic, expectorant and alleviates spasms (plant); antibacterial, fever, Anti-pertussis, headache, rheumatism (leaf); antibilious (plant decoction); blood coagulant, piles (Flowers); expectorant, antiemetic, laxative (Alhagi manna). The solid extract of Camelthorn is named manna (Taranjabin in Persian). The manna (Taranjabin) had cold nature and very useful for treatment of jaundice (yellow color of the skin) and abdominal pains (bellyache) in children. The aerial parts contain flavonoids, tannins, sterols, triterpenes, saponins and anthroquinones.
