Abstract

Heretofore, some analytical methods are presented to find the stress field of bonded joints, particularly near the edges of the bonding region in which the destruction may usually occur. However, results obtained using these methods due to several simplifying assumptions are not as enough accurate as required. In this paper, the stress analysis of heterogeneous thick-substrate double-sided strap joints (DSSJs) subjected to uniaxial tension is presented using full layerwise theory (FLWT). Assuming a special layerwise displacement field, which is continuous through the thickness of the joint, the FLWT can more accurately predict the interfacial peel and shear stress distributions along the bonding lines and through the substrate thickness. These stress components are important to be determined in order to predict the mechanical behavior of the joint. To formulate the problem, three dimensional elasticity equations are rephrased in terms of the introduced displacement field to obtain the governing equations of equilibrium. The more accurate stress field predicted by this method can be generally used as a scaling solution to evaluate the authenticity of other analytical and numerical solutions.
