Abstract

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have unique physical and chemical properties that open attractive possibilities in many applications [1-3]. Similarly, impurities, such as metal and amorphous carbon produced during the synthesis of the CNTs, reduce their application. Thus, it is necessary to purify the CNTs prior to use. In this study A rapid microwave-assisted method was developed for the purification of arrays of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using KMnO4. The Pristine MWCNTs (75 mg) were added to 40 ml of KMnO4 in a sealed, Teflon-lined, reaction vessel (100 ml). Each Different experiment was performed at different oxidation time (5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 min). Microwave irradiation power and temperature were set to 700 W and 90oC respectively, which are regulated by a PID controller. After oxidation CNTs, each mixture was filtered using a PTFE membrane (0.22 µm) and washed with distilled water. Finally, the filtrand was dried at 70oC for 12 h. Samples purity are documented with SEM, TEM, electron microprobe analysis, Raman, and UV-visible. Figures1illustrates SEM images of pristine and treated MWCNTs.
