Abstract

Application of organic amendments can be a proper solution to reclaim and improve physical properties of saline sodic soils. In this research, an experiment was performed in greenhouse condition to study the effect of some amendments on physical properties in a loamy saline-sodic soil. Five treatments included no any amendment as a control, urban solid waste compost (CM), Vermi-compose (VC), poultry manure (PM), and gypsum powder (G). The amount of each soil amendment was 10 ton/ha and each treatment had 3 replications with a completely randomized design. The results showed that as compared with the control, soil amendments decreased bulk density (P < 0.05), and increased aggregate stability (MWD) (P < 0.05), but the difference between G and VM treatments was not significant (P > 0.05). The Ks value in G treatment was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than others treatments. Utilization of amendments significantly increased structural index (Sgi index), defined as the slope of retention curve at its inflection point, but no difference was observed between G and CM. In addition, organic amendments increased plant available water content (PAWC) significantly (P < 0.05) in relation to control, and the maximum increasing value (37%) was observed in PM treatment. According to their positive effects on soil physical quality, application of organic and/or inorganic amendments is recommended for a saline sodic soil.
