Abstract

Microalgae grown on wastewater media are a potential source of low-cost lipids for production of biodiesel. This study investigated the capacity of a certain wastewater for microalgae production and improvement of treated watewater parameters such as nitrate, phosphate and COD. The best biomass productivity was achieved using CO2 and bicarbonate as carbon sources along with aeration. COD removal was best without the presence of CO2. Nitrate and phosphate removal was maximized when aerated wastewater was used for algal growth without the usage of CO2 and use of bicarbonate as carbon source.
