Abstract

Introduction The near infrared (NIR) range of the light spectrum (650-1000 nm) can be used to monitor tissue’s hemodynamic activity, since NIR photons are able to penetrate even relatively dense biological tissue, including skin and bone. With NIRS it became possible to monitor the variation in oxy, deoxy and total hemoglobin concentration in living tissue. This is possible because the different body chromophores have each their individual absorption characteristic. So, sending NIR photons of appropriate wavelengths into tissue and evaluating the back-scattered light the concentration of chromophores can be estimated.
