Abstract
The current study was conducted to determine the chemical composition and nutritive value of farm and greenhouse tomato plant. Plants were evaluated using in vitro gas production method and batch rumen culture system where volume of gas produced, pH and NH3-N concentration were measured. The samples of tomato plant were collected in late stages growth and analyzed for chemical composition including crude protein (CP), ash, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF). The collected foliage was divided into two parts, one parts was dried in the shade and another parts was ensiled for 60 days. The foliage had crude protein content 15% and high moisture content (up to 70% of DM). The CP and ash contents of plants were considerably high. Ensiled tomato plant had higher crude protein and dry matter than dried tomato plant. However, in the fermentation products, there was no significant difference in pH and NH3-N concentration for ensiled and dried tomato plant. The gas produced by the asymptotic gas production (B) was highest for dried farm tomato shoot whereas lag time (L) was highest for ensiled greenhouse tomato plant. The organic matter digestibility (OMD), metabolisable energy (ME), short chain fatty acids (SCFA) and feed fermentation efficacy (FFE) in dried farm tomato shoot were higher than others. In conclusion, based on evaluation using in vitro gas production tomato plant as dried or ensiled can be regarded as feed resources for ruminants.
