Abstract

The objective of the current study is to investigate the influence of design factors of an orthopedic screw on stress shielding in bone-implant models. The Taguchi method with the design of experiments (DOE) is used for the optimal design of the implant. Pullout force is a common cause of screws failure. Therefore, pullout force of 80N exerts on the head of the screws to study the effect of different parameters. Defined stress transfer parameter (STP) demonstrates that elastic modulus has the most significant influence on stress shielding. Greater STP values means stress distribution is more uniform in the vicinity of bone-implant interface, which results in less stress shielding.
