Abstract

The world has been confronted with environmental and energetic crises due to the depletion of natural resources and increased population as well as environmental pollution [1]. In the past decades, biodiesel emerged as a carbon neutral, renewable and biodegradable energy alternative to alleviate the demand on petroleum. Biodiesel is mainly consists of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) which can be produced through transesterification reaction. Two kinds of catalysts, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, have been used for the transesterification reaction. Although homogenous catalysts allow transesterification to be performed in a shorter reaction time under moderate operating conditions, the catalyst separation and biodiesel purification steps will produce a large amount of waste water leading to an increase in production cost and environmental pollution. Many catalysts were utilized; but the zirconia base’s catalysts are shown high activity. Zirconia catalysts illustrated amphoteric properties, beside of the acidic strength; they have basic aspects which can be a very well advantage for the catalyst. In this study, the supported nano-particle of calcium oxide by zirconia and titanium dioxide was synthesized via sol – gel citrat method.
