Abstract

Grammar teaching has always been a controversial issue in its being taught implicitly or explicitly. Although there have been several debates on either side, the comparison between the effects of each method upon the students’ grammatical understanding and achievement is of importance. To this end, students at different levels can be evaluated from the viewpoint that how better or worse they may progress in grammar learning without or through using implicit methodologies. Various implicit techniques such as peer interaction input flooding, guessing, using media, and so on for grammar instruction have been proposed so far. However, among all these methods, using pictures and imposed images along with grammatical structures and points accompanying them can have a significant impact upon the students’ grammatical progress. In this thesis, the relation between using pictures and imposed images, as a kind of implicit method and visualization practice, and grammatical achievement by two groups of intermediate EFL students who were 120 in total has been investigated. Both the experimental and control group were taught by the researcher himself, but only the experimental group received the treatment and the control group were taught applying the ordinary methods of teaching grammar. Both groups were given the pretest in the beginning of the treatment and the posttest after the treatment was over. The analysis of the results indicated that teaching grammar through using images would not only have a positive effect upon the learners’ grammatical achievement but also could facilitate the process of grammar learning. Moreover, the analysis of the answers the experimental group gave to the questionnaire at the end of the treatment indicates their positive attitude toward image-oriented grammar instruction and the fact that they were also able to fix some mental images of the grammatical structures covered in their minds since they were at the exposure of a number of pictures associated with the related grammatical points during the whole program.
