Introduction: Diabetes is a common cause of impaired wound healing. Modern medicine and traditional in diabetic wound healing is weak, so the discovery of new compounds is essential for wound healing. Urtica dioica has antidiabetic, antioxidant, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties and contains substances such as flavonoids, tannins and histamine that are effective in accelerating wound healing which is questioned in this study. Methods: Male Wistar rats (250-300 g) were used in this study. Four 4-mm wounds were created on the back of the rats. Two ulcers were treated by saline and two others were treated by concentrations of 100 mg/l Urtica dioica extract in each animal. Wound diagonals were determined 1, 3, 5, 8, and 18 days after creating wounds and statistical analysis was performed. Results: Percentage of wound healing in diabetic rats was lower compared to control group on all days (P<0.05). Percentage of wound healing in diabetic rats treated with the concentrations of 100 mg /l of Urtica dioica extract were more compared to untreated diabetic group on all days (P<0.05). Conclusion: Hyperglycemia, impaired wound healing. Urtica dioica by lowering blood glucose can reverse the disorder. Histamine in Urtica dioica may accelerate the inflammatory phase of wound healing, production of vascular endothelial growth factor and cell proliferation. Plant flavonoids also have anti-inflammatory effect so it probably shortens the wound healing period.
