Abstract

Microalgae have been receiving considerable interest among various sources for biodiesel production. Due to microalgae’s small cell size and low density, there are technical challenges in their harvesting process. As an economical viable method, this study investigates the flocculation of microalgae strain Chlorella sp Full factorial design is used to statistically study the effect of key factors on the flocculation process. The research variables consisted two different flocculants of Al2(SO4)3.18H2O and FeCl3, their dosage, and pH of the solution. Flocculation efficiency in each sample examined by the means of optical density (OD). The results indicated that interaction between flocculent type and dosage mainly affected the process. In the case of FeCl3 increasing the pH and dosage lead to decreasing the flocculation efficiency. Other site, in the presence of Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, both pH and dosage had a positive effect on the flocculation efficiency.
