Abstract
Graphene is at the center of an ever growing research effort due to its unique properties, interesting for both fundamental science and applications. A key requirement for applications is the development of industrial-scale, reliable, inexpensive production processes. This work describes the synthesis of Graphene oxide (GO) by Modified Hummer’s method from graphite powders. Structural and Optical properties of the products were investigated with the help of ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). UV-vis spectra of GO exhibit maximum absorption peak at ~240 nm and the XRD results showed 2θ of 11.72° with inter layer spacing equal to 0.75 nm. The results of FT-IR showed that graphite oxidized by strong oxidants caused the oxygen atoms introduced into the graphite layer.
