Background and Aim: Escherichia coli is recognized as one of the most important bacterial pathogens of urinary tract infections (UTIs) affecting both male a nd female individuals with different age.The aim of this study was to assess genetic diversity of Escherichia coli isolates from urinary tract infections in different age groups of patients by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC - PCR) tech nique. Methods: A total of 70 E. coli isolates from urine samples were obtained from hospitalized patients who were diagnosed with urinary tract infectionin Ghaem hospital in Mashhad. Urinary E. coli isolates from woman aged and from man aged were confirmed by standard microbiology methods. Genetic diversity of isolates in different age groups were evaluated by using ERIC - PCR analysis. Results: The ERIC - PCR profiles allowed typing of all 70 isolates which were grouped into 11 clusters based on different bandi ng pattern ranging, numerous bands (1 - 8 bands) ranging from 100 to 2700 base pairs.8 cluster was the most common cluster (32.86%).in 8 cluster, women different aged (73.91%) and man different aged (26.09%). Conclusion: our results showed high genetic divers ity of isolates between and within different age groupsof patients
