Abstract

Distance protection is one of the main protections in sub-transmission and transmission power systems, which could have mal-operation in some cases such as power swing.Nowadays, wind energy and wind farms penetration in electricity generation have shown noticeable rise, due to the improvement of technologies in wind turbines, increase of electricity prices, reduction in fossil resources and the ever growing environmental concerns. In this paper, the effect of wind farm on power swing detection in distance relay has been discussed. A constant speed wind turbine has been utilized on the Binalood wind farm network which is selected as the appropriate case study.Simulations are performed in the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation environment. Based on the obtained results, it can be seen that constant speed wind farm improves power swing. Furthermore,power swing intensity decreases when wind farm power generation increases.
