Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the performance of two sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) placed in an open channel in different configurations including single mode, series mode and parallel mode. The SMFC performances were analyzed during two months. SMFC-1 and SMFC-2 produced maximum power density of 21.5 and 26.4 mW/m2, respectively, in single mode. In addition, series and parallel connections of SMFCs were studied. In series mode, maximum power density was 18 mW/m2 while in parallel connection the power density of 38.5 mW/m2 was obtained, which was considerably higher than that of the single and series modes.
