Abstract
Background: Bacterial biofilms play an important role in urinary tract infections (UTIs). According to recent studies, bacterial biofilms account for more than 60% of chronic human infection. Bacterial biofilms generate 10 to 1000 times more resistance to antibiotics and antimicrobial agents than planktonic bacteria. Methods: This study has been conducted with the search and collection of more than 100 papers on bacterial biofilms, urinary tract infections, antibiotic resistance and other related subjects in authoritative databases and journals. Results: The bacterial biofilms with their extracellular matrix that surrounding it, block their antibiotics and anti-microbial agents into their targets. In fact, the matrix plays a protective layer against to the host immune response. Bacterial biofilms reduce the growth rate of bacteria by reducing enzymes and nutrients in the environment, and this can be effective in controlling the microbial activity of that area. Recent research indicates that bacterial biofilms, in addition to chronic and recurrent infections, may also play a role in the formation of kidney stones. Conclusion: Bacterial biofilms play a major role in chronic and recurrent infections in the urinary tract. The growth and formation of biofilms is a major activity in the development of antibiotic resistance and must be considered as a primary goal for the treatment of bacterial biofilms-associated infections.
