Abstract

This paper evaluates the role ofIRdrop on initiation of the crevice corrosion of 316 L stainless steel in 3.5% NaClsolution. For this purpose, potentiodynamic and galvanostatic experiments and macroscopic/microscopic ob-servations were implemented at crevice gaps of 30, 60, 120 and 240μm. According to the results, two distinctstages of crevice corrosion of 316 L stainless steel were observed: crevice initiation and propagation. The crevicecorrosion was found to be initiated by scattered pits without any significantIRdrop. However, when the currentincreased due to pitting occurrence, theIRdrop increased considerably.
