Abstract

Allusions, as a type of culture-specific item, can pose a challenge for translators in intercultural communication especially between fairly distant cultures such as Anglophone and Iranian. Their rendition, interestingly, is certainly not any easier in the context of audiovisual translation. This study investigated the variety and the frequency of the audiovisual translators’ solutions and strategies for the rendition of verbal allusions in Persian dubbing of Tarantino’s films. The results indicated that Direct Transfer and Literal Translation were the most frequently used strategies for the rendition of proper names and key-phrase allusions, respectively. Replacement by SL name and Borrowing were the least frequent strategies in the rendition of proper name allusions. In addition, Borrowing and Local Equivalent had a low frequency in the rendition of key-phrase allusions. The results of the study are discussed in relation to the related literature.
