Abstract

With the objective of achieving a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms and also aiming at providing information for the improvement of numerical modeling of the flow around low-aspect-ratio wings at low Reynolds number, Stereo Particle Image Velocimetry measurements have been carried out at Re = 140,000. Detailed data comparisons have been made against Detached Eddy Simulations using “shielded” and “delayed” modeling approaches for the SST k-omega turbulence model, and also a reference Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes calculation. The experiments have demonstrated that, despite the minor differences encountered in lift coefficient, best results were clearly obtained with the “delayed” modeling at high incidence, whereas the other models completely missed a correct reproduction of the flow physics. Subsequently, in order to explore the potential of hybrid (passive/active) stall control in a fixed-wing Micro Aerial Vehicle without compromising its endurance, micro-energy harvesting has been considered. The design process of a structure-embedded cantilever device has been carried out to assess the power that can be harvested from flow-induced structural vibrations. The computational analysis was based on an electro-mechanical model coupling of mechanics equations and piezoelectric effect. A detailed frequency analysis was performed to assist the design of the harvester. A prototype for wind tunnel testing has been designed and assembled so that more detailed information concerning frequency and acceleration ranges may be gathered, ultimately allowing the demonstration of the hybrid concept.
