Abstract
Leisure and spending part of that in green space is very important in the life of urban elderlies, hereupon covered by sustainable development goals. Nowadays, despite the great importance of urban green space (UGS) as one of the most effective land uses in cities and in the lifestyle of the elderly, problems such as air pollution have made their use challenging. These challenges are more apparent in densely populated and tourist cities, especially in developing countries. This situation is true in Mashhad as the second metropolis of Iran with a population of over 3 million people and nearly several million tourists. In the present study, in order to create a comprehensive understanding of the air pollution situation in parks and urban green spaces, using the data of air pollution monitoring stations, a map of CO emission was prepared. Due to the few number of pollution monitoring stations, in order to prepare a more accurate spatial map of CO pollution distribution in the city, maps of commercial land uses, bus stations and terminals were applied to the pollution layer as the main sources of CO pollution. Then the average pollution in urban green spaces was calculated. Finally, by identifying the blocks located within a radius of 300 meters from parks and UGSs, the level of pollution risk for the elderly women was estimated. The results show that out of 570 urban green spaces, more than 25% of them are in the good and very good air quality and nearly 40% of them are in unhealthy for normal and vulnerable groups (264 hectares). Elderly women living within a 300-meter radius of high risk UGSs are close to 40%. While only 26% of these women live in areas close to low-pollution UGSs. It seems necessary to develop solution to reduce air pollution in the UGSs or warn the elderlies.
