Abstract

Background and Aim: Intestinal helminths in dogs provide a potential source of infection in humans due to the close contact between humans and dogs. Because of the limited information about helminth infection in dogs in Shirvan city, a cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the frequency of gastrointestinal helminth in the feces of sheepdogs and watchdogs in this area. Methods: In this study, 140 fecal samples were collected from December 2020 to July 2021, and tested for helminth eggs using sedimentation technique. Characteristics of each dog including age, sex, stool consistency and history of consumption of infected viscera were recorded in the relevant registration form with a specific identification code. Results: Overall, 39 of 140 fecal samples (27.85%) were found infected with helminths. The observed helminth eggs of fecal samples were as follows: Taenia (12.85%), Dipylidium caninum (9.28%), Trichuris (8.08%), Toxocara canis (2.94%) and Hook worm eggs (1.47%). There were no significant differences for the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths between female (7.85%) and male (20%) and between young (2.14 %) and adult (25.71%) animals. Conclusion: The present study showed dogs of the suburban areas of Shirvan city were infected with high prevalence of helminths, some of which can be a serious threat to public health. Therefore, it is recommended to increase the awareness of people and treat dogs with appropriate anthelmintic to reduce the risk of transmission of zoonotic parasites from dogs to humans and other animals such as livestock.
