To investigate the relationship between seed vigour and cell cycle speed, we monitored the cell cycle in ten wheat seed lots, with different levels of vigour, using flow cytometry. The tips of the embryonic roots were excised from low and high vigour seeds at 3 to 48 hours after imbibition, and squeezed to release the nuclei. The lysed cells were analyzed by flow cytometry. The results showed that the speed of the cell cycle was different between the seed lots. High vigour seeds showed faster cell cycle in the first hours of imbibition. High vigour seeds had higher G2/G1 ratio at 18 h after the imbibition. The G2/G1 ratio at 18 hours after imbibition is suggested as a possible marker of seed vigour.
