Abstract
Nanocomposite coatings are a new branch of deposition that possess unique physical and mechanical properties and are synthesized by directly adding two or more different nanoscale materials into the plating solution. The nanocomposite coatings present higher hardness, wear, and corrosion resistance compared with pure metal, alloys, or conventional micro-composites, in different engineering applications. The electroplating and electroless methods are the most common for preparing nanocomposite coatings. This review emphasizes the development of electroless nickel-phosphorus composite coatings by incorporating different types of hard and soft nanoparticles in the nickelphosphorus matrix to improve the wear and corrosion properties of the coatings
