Abstract
Methanol is the simplest alcohol and a colorless liquid with a distinct smell. It is produced by hydrogenation of CO2 and CO. Methanol synthesis process is currently the second source of hydrogen consumption after ammonia production. Production capacity of methanol plants is growing worldwide. This issue increases the emission of carbon dioxide to the environment from synthesis gas production section of the methanol processes. This paper aims to present the possibility of integrating of methanol and methanation processes to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the methanol process and increase the carbon efficiency of the plant. Purified CO2 exit from stack of the furnace of the primary reformer of the methanol process and produced hydrogen from electrolysis of water are the two raw materials for methanation process. For the integrated case-study, the amount of emitted CO2 to the atmosphere decreased by about 87% and the consumption of natural gas decreased by about 23% as well.
