The imperative for internationalization among Iranian universities, coupled with the incentives provided by relevant legislation, underscores the criticality of effective internationalization strategies. However, the scarcity of qualified leadership, academic staff, and students poses significant challenges to achieving this goal. To navigate this landscape successfully, a well-defined roadmap is essential. This research delves into the concept of internationalization strategic planning and its practical application. Comprising five distinct sections, this article initially introduces the theoretical framework of strategic planning. Subsequently, it outlines key strategic indicators for internationalization within Iranian universities. A comprehensive examination of regional cooperation opportunities for Iranian institutions follows. Drawing on the successful example of Ferdowsi University, the research then presents a strategic roadmap for other Iranian universities aspiring to internationalize. Finally, it offers valuable insights into the dos and don’ts of strategic planning to facilitate effective university internationalization.
