Abstract
In reciprocating internal combustion engines, accurate calculation of the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) is essential to estimate the heat exchange during the combustion process within the combustion chamber. The HTC is influenced by fluid dynamics and combustion phenomena and varies with crank angle and spatial position within the chamber. Generally, an average HTC value is used in the thermo-mechanical analysis of various engine components. In this study, dynamic grids for intake, exhaust, and chamber processes in the AVL-Fire software are used to evaluate the distribution of HTC along the chamber walls using a time-stepping approach. The HTC results were validated against theoretical data provided by Woschni and Hohenberg. To address the challenges posed by the decreasing availability of fossil fuels and the increasing demand for reduced exhaust emissions, this research examines an engine operating on a fuel blend of 10% hydrogen and 90% diesel, which results in an estimated 1.72% increase in the heat transfer coefficient due to the increased collision frequency between hydrogen molecules and other fuel components.
